Names, names, names. It’s always about names.

Okay, I joined Blog Azeroth pretty late in the game, ’tis true. But I thought I would go through the blog storming and see what piqued my interest. One of the earlier blog topics suggested was “How did you name your characters?” I don’t know that any of my characters have a particularly interesting naming history but here goes.

Flaime: Well, for one thing, Flaime is just a cool name. I originally discovered the name in a peice of 18th century American literature that I was reading when I was actually studying for my Master’s (which I didn’t complete because none of my professors would take on a Master’s thesis on comparitive criticism of Golden Age science fiction. Undignified, they said. Mostly it was because they had specialties that didn’t allow them to objectively or professionally assess what I was writing about). Eventually, I started using the name Flaime for a character in a Vampire LARP and it just sort of stuck around.

Chingching: When I made her, I thought my female gnome mage looked vaguely Asian, so I wanted a vaguely Asian name that wasn’t really. There is a province in China (I don’t know the name, just the tidbit) that has a trend of giving children names Anglicize as repeated syllables (Lingling, Ningning, Songsong are the names of three people I actually know from the province living and working here in Illinois). So I went with Chingching, which I thought sounded neat.

Anyette: This one is simple. I was going to call her Annette but it was taken, so I went with a near rhyme in Anyette. Why Annette? Well, at the time, warlocks were still pretty innocuous, so I wanted an innocuous sounding name.

Janeholy: Female dwarf paladin. I couldn’t very well call her Joeholy, now could I?

Grobber: I don’t know where I came up with Grobber. But it works for a me with a male dwarf hunter.

Hobkin: This is from my role-playing days too. A friend of mine had a race called Hobs in his game. Hobkin were the friends of Hobs, a mischeivous, fey race with outsized power. It seemed to fit a gnome rogue killing machine;).

Eirin: I once had a big crush on a girl named Airie. But Airie, Eirie, and Airin were all taken, so I settled on Eirin.

Shamanblue: Well, he’s a shaman. And he’s blue. This was the last character I created and I wasn’t feeling particularly creative at the time.:P

Rhinestone: Rhinestone is my “comedy female gnome warrior”. I created her when with a friend who created a female gnome warrior named Sparkles. Not only do I think it’s an excellent name for a female gnome warrior, but it’s fun to kill people and shout “See that light! It’s the reflection from Rhinestone!”

Dumont: This is another toon name that comes out of a personal joke…A friend of mine rolled a paladin named Dupre. But I could never remember his name. So I’d call him Dumont all the time. So, when I decided to roll a human priest (Desperate Prayer ftw), I named him Dumont, in honor of Dupre:D.
